Le Grand Jones is a duo consisting of Scotty Marz and Philip DeFreeze. They met at The Whitby School in Greenwich CT. The two have been creating music together for well over a decade under various names and incarnations, finally ending up with the Le Grand Jones sound.
LGJ’s music is often referred to as Down Tempo or Trip-Hop ,their form of electronic music actually owes more to the synthesizer sounds of the 1970s and 80’s and references such bands as Kraftwerk, Gary Newman, Duran Duran, Yello and Depeche Mode . Other influences that are more readily apparent are psychedelic rock pioneers like Pink Floyd, David Bowie and more contemporary bands that have forged the genre like Zero 7 and AIR. (although there are some echoes of dance music styles in the production) another influences include… UK Roots Reggae act Steal Pulse and the Clash. LJGs music also has blues and jazz inflections echoing Phil's father's influence as a jazz drummer.
Before they founded Le Grand Jones, Marz and De Freeze played together in the band Sugar Kane that was signed to the infamous 90’s indy label TVT Records in New York City. They shared the labels line up with such acts as The Jack Rubies and Nine Inch Nails. The Bands name stands for the two streets that Scott and Philip lived on as children.
Marz- is also an accomplished DJ and remixer who has a long list of credits and Remixes-He has been spinning records for most of his life.
Le grand Jones uses mostly vintage synths and hardware to create their studio music. There is always a blend of yesterday and today whenever they approach music making. LGJ often works together with artists like Laura Merrill “find your way”. David Scott and drummer Craig Sala of Paranoid Social Club and Pierre De Beauport . These artist appeared on their debut 2013 EP “Everything Happens ”.
Le Grand Jone' music has also frequently been used in Media and TV for a varieties of programs and applications.
